They say a picture is worth a 1,000 words. Today you will see with your own eyes the Jewish wonder which is rising from the ground in the so called west bank. It is called the City of Ari'el located in the Shomron (Samaria) region of the Land of Israel.
The Hebrew meaning of the word Ari'el is Lion of G-d. Today Ari'el is a symbol of Jewish strength on the Land that is at the cradle of Jewish civilization.
In 1978, 40 courageous families planted themselves on the top of a hill in Shomron with the purpose of settling the land. Today Ariel is a thriving city of 18,000 people and the entire Ariel settlement block of settlements which is shown by the small black dots which are in the vicinity of the city on the map near the top of the page has about 40,000 souls. Located just off the highway it is just a short drive to, the Greater Tel-Aviv Area. You are never far away from a great employment opportunity.
In 1979 Ariel opened its first school, community center and Library. Today Ariel has shopping centers, a sports complex, tennis courts, a fitness center, mini golf, a television studio, a Hotel, an Absorption center for new immigrants, a civil court, a Rabbinical court, 14 synagogues and a four Lane highway that comes to the door step of the city. It is a western wonder in design and prosperity equal or better then in any western nation.
About half the population is from the former Soviet Union Nations. It is mainly a secular city however about 10% of the population is orthodox. A person recently visiting Ariel was impressed not only with its exalted high location but with the clean orderly appearance of the city. Although not many are religious, he could still see the G-d of Avraham avinu at work in their midst providing the good of the land to His people and handing them His blessing. In other words, Ariel is a good place to live. It has a nice out door pedestrian mall that is nice to walk through and have a falafel. The parks are beautiful and it is a safe city and would be a show case community in any first world nation.
However the real Jewel of the city is the College of Judea and Samaria. It has about 9,000 students. Many come from all over the country. Just recently the government decided to upgrade it to the status of a University. The faculty contains many scientists and accomplished people. Advanced research is conducted here with numerous research and development activities being worked on. Some of the projects include, robotics, electro-optics, crystal growth, environmental studies, radiation testing and Laser use.
In 2003 they began
development of a navigation program for planetary rover missions.
Dozens of expert from the former Soviet Union nations have found jobs at the
university working on many of these research projects. The college has published
over 400 papers in international Journals on science and technology. Besides all
this the college has courses in engineering, computer programming, childcare and
clerical services. There are also adult education classes in subjects such as
psychology, computers, electronics and tourism.
Some may call Ariel a settlement but the truth of the matter is that someday it could be one of the world’s most important cities.
There is regular bus service from Ariel to Tel Aviv. From Tel Aviv feel free to take a train to the Holy City or the beautiful beaches of Ashkelon in the south or the beautiful beaches of Nahariya in the north. In Israel you are free.

“Those who trust in HaShem are like Mount Zion, which
cannot be moved, but abides forever. As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so
HaShem surrounds His people, from this time forth and forever.”
